Last week we listened to the story "Jack and the Beanstalk" we talked about the characters, setting, and events.  We are reviewing the consonants and vowels.  The children have been reciting their poetry for the month.  Ask your child to recite the poems to you.  The titles are:  Hamburger, Hamburger   Spaghetti, Spaghetti    and Lollipop, Lollipop. We worked on putting a sentence together by unscrambling the words and looking for capital letters and punctuation marks.

During the week of September 24th we will begin reading Unit 1 Week 1 in the Wonders Textbook.  The first stories we will read are "Jack Can, and "Nat and Sam."  In phonics, we will review the vowel short a.  In Grammar, we will continue to talk about how to write a sentence and that each sentence starts with a capital letter.

Homework will be assigned. I will send home a homework sheet for the week. Your child should do all of their homework in the marble notebook that is sent home everyday except Fridays.

Please make flash cards with your child, using the spelling and high frequency word list we work on every week.

As soon as the Wonders login and updates are assigned to me, I will send the information home with you.  If you would prefer that your child read the assigned literature from your home computer please let me know.  If you prefer, I can send home the softcover textbook.  The Grammar workbook and the Spelling/Phonics workbook will be sent home when there is an assignment in it.  Also, your child will take home a short booklet from their practice workbook, please save  the booklets and have your child read the books to you. Thank you for your understanding.

Every week I will update the First Grade class page to keep you informed regarding our weekly lessons and other relevant information regarding your child's assignments.

Homework will be assigned daily except Fridays and holidays.  I will post the homework assignments online in the First Grade ELA calendar. The WONDERS literature textbooks are available online.  Please check your child's "To Do" file for the assignments. Your child's login and password are the same.

I strongly recommend that you encourage your child to review the online reading activities. The phonics, comprehension, spelling, and vocabulary activities are an essential tool for your child to utilize.  Please contact me if you are having difficulty with the online WONDERS Program. If you do not have access to a computer please let me know and your child can take home the textbook to complete their homework.

I am looking forward to working with you to ensure that your child has a rewarding and wonderful year in my ELA class!  Please contact me if you have any questions.

Sincerely yours,

Mrs. DiCaprio
