First Grade ELA2016-2017

            Welcome to First Grade
                    Mrs. DiCaprio
                     March 2017

Last week we worked on Unit 3 Week 1 and learned about time by reading stories about characters in fiction stories who are late.  We will make a sun dial in class in order for the children to understand that in the past people did not always have clocks and watches to tell time. In Phonics and Spelling we reviewed the long 'a' vowel sound.  In Grammar we are learning about verbs and reviewing nouns. We will start Unit 3 Week 2 on Wednesday.  The stories will be about plants and watching plants as they grow.

Please make flash cards with your child, using the spelling and high frequency word list we work on every week.  This strategy will build your child's fluency and comprehension skills.

I hope everyone can login with the simplified login that Mrs. Kemp and I ut into place.  I will send the reading textbooks home and spelling/phonics workbooks home when homework is assigned in those books. Please let me know if your child has access to a computer and does not need to take home the textbook.  The Spelling/Phonics workbook will go home when there is an assignment in it.  Also, your child has been taking home a short booklet from the practice workbook, please save and have your child review the books. Thank you for your understanding.

Every week I will update the First Grade class page to keep you informed regarding our weekly lessons and other relevant information regarding your child's assignments.

Homework will be assigned daily except Fridays and holidays.  I will post the homework assignments online in the First Grade ELA calendar. The WONDERS literature textbooks are available online.  Please check your child's "To Do" file for the assignments. Your child's login and password are the same.  However, I will send home your child's password and login by Monday, September 12th for your records.

I strongly recommend that you encourage your child to review the online reading activities. The phonics, comprehension, spelling, and vocabulary activities are an essential tool for your child to utilize.  Please contact me if you are having difficulty with the online WONDERS Program. If you do not have access to a computer please let me know and your child can take home the textbook to complete their homework.

I am looking forward to working with you to ensure that your child has a rewarding and wonderful year in my ELA class!  Please contact me if you have any questions.

Sincerely yours,

Mrs. DiCaprio
